Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is a remote and culturally rich destination located south of the Ngorongoro Highlands in northern Tanzania. The shallow seasonal soda lake lies within the Great Rift Valley and is surrounded by dramatic escarpments, rocky hills, and open savannah plains. It is best known as home to the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes, some of Tanzania’s last remaining traditional hunter-gatherer and pastoralist communities. Visitors can join Hadzabe hunters at dawn to learn ancient tracking and bow-hunting techniques, observe daily life in Datoga homesteads, and gain deep insight into indigenous cultures. Birdlife is abundant around the lake shores, especially flamingos, pelicans, and storks during wetter months. Lake Eyasi is ideal for travelers seeking authentic cultural encounters and off-the-beaten-path exploration rather than classic big-game safaris.
